So when Henry said he wanted to take her to a lakeside resort for four days before school started, I said yes.

At the car, I kissed her forehead and said, “Call me if you need me for anything. I mean anything.”

She smiled. “I know, Mom.”

On the third afternoon, my phone rang.

“Mom, please come get me,” Mary whispered, crying so hard I could barely hear her. “Please hurry.”

Before she could answer, I heard a door bang open.

Then Brooke’s voice came through the phone.

“Mary, I told you not to call anyone.”

I called again and again until my hand shook so badly I nearly dropped the phone.
